Holiday Traditions (Due Friday, December 16th)

What are some of your family's holiday traditions?  OR What are you most looking forward to over Holiday Break?

For example, if you were Bob Cratchit from A Christmas Carol, you might write:

I look forward to going down the slide at Cornhill twenty times in honor of Christmas Eve and then playing blindman's buff again like a boy.  Taking Tiny Tim to church is always special because of his thoughtful observations.  My wife's cooking is always a treat, especially her scrumptious goose and Christmas pudding.  I look forward to sitting around the fire with my family and passing the custard-cup back and forth while we revel and play games.  Even though Mr. Scrooge doesn't understand it, Christmas Day is different from the rest of the days of the year, and I look forward to enjoying it with my family!

  1. We have a few Christmas traditions. First of all, our family never stays in Charlottesville for Christmas. We always either go to my grandparents who lived in Fairfax, VA, (but now live in Tallahassee, FL), or my grandparents who live in Easton, MD. We also often go to church on Christmas Eve, which is one few times we go to Church each year. At my grandparents in Easton, we put candles on their tree (but we keep them unguarded!) and put out a spinning German pyramid, powered by candle heat. At my grandparents Who lived in Fairfax, we unwrap a pyramid of presents! Christmas is very fun in our family. Ian

  2. We have a few Christmas traditions. One is that we make Quiche, Cinnamon roles, and we make Beef wellington. Another tradition is that our grandparents come to visit. We usually go to church on Christmas eve. We hang lots of ornaments on the tree, and me and my brother switch out putting a big Santa on our tree.

  3. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, we always get the Christmas tree in Waynesboro. My mother insists on listening to Christmas music until my dad cuts her off the day after Christmas. For Christmas, we usually go to my grandparents’ house in Rochester, New York. (My father was orphaned when he was 11-years-old, the same age as I am now.) This year my cousins are coming from Colorado: Julia is 13, and Sean is 15. My Rochester cousins will be there, too. They are pretty much grown up now. I have a cousin in Chicago who is Jewish, but he has to go skiing and abandon us. On Christmas morning, we drive from the hotel to my grandparents' house and wait for everyone to get there to open presents. We take turns opening presents. It takes all day. For New Year’s, we always meet at different places with my friend Parker and his parents from Georgia. This is the second year in a row we are going to Charleston, SC, because we like it so much. Parker and I stay up all night watching the big globe strike 12. On the way to my grandparents’ house, this year, we are stopping in New York city, see the Rockettes at Radio City, and window shop. We are going ice skating in Bryant Park, and also when we get to Rochester. I am looking forward to getting a skateboard for Christmas because I know how to use it, but I just don’t have one. Merry Christmas and a Happy Duck Year.

  4. My favorite holiday is Christmas. Everyone is happy and giving. On Christmas eve we get together with cousins and reenact the nativity. We sometimes make cookies and get to open our Christmas Pajamas. Then we all go to sleep. We wake up and open presents. The annoying thing is we always have to take turns opening our presents. We have a large breakfast with all our family. We also call our Grandparents in Utah and wish them a Merry Christmas. We play with our toys and party all day. That is why Christmas is my favorite holiday.

Over the Christmas break I am looking forward to doing lots of things. The time that I am most looking forward to is Christmas morning. Our family takes turns opening presents and we have a special breakfast. Later in the day when we are all tired we always watch this really old black and white British movie of A Christmas Carol that I love. Sometimes we have a big bonfire later at night. After Christmas day I am looking forward to sleeping in, playing outside, visiting my cousins in Washington, and spending time with my animals, the sheep, dogs, and ducks. I have been wanting to write a story since September and never have time, so I am going to really try to write one but I don't know what it's about yet.

  6. We do not have very many holiday traditions but these are our traditions. For Christmas we buy a fresh new tree then Andrew, Sofia and I decorate the tree. Also we open one gift on Christmas Eve. Every year my Mom loves to make homemade Christmas cookies. We always go to mass on Christmas Eve. Also every year we have a big fish dinner on Christmas Eve. Every Christmas day me and Andrew love to wake up early. Those are our Holiday traditions we do every year.

  11. I don't really have a Christmas tradition like stringing mistletoe everywhere or leave cookies and carrots out for "Santa" ( he’s not real) but I do have BIG one thing that might as well be a tradition; not sleeping well on Christmas Eve. I usually do get to open a present on Christmas Eve, but it has to be a small present. I am also aloud to open one present before my parents get up on Christmas Morning. I usually also see my grandmothers on Christmas Day.

  13. What I am looking foward to do over break is to relax, read some books, sleep and just wait for Christmas Eve. I am also looking foward to some holiday football bowl games. I really am looking foward to going to the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta. UVA vs. Auburn December 31st.
