The Community in The Giver is very different from our own. The Giver explains to Jonas that the Elders gave up color and choice when they chose Sameness. Jonas agrees and admits, "We really have to protect people from wrong choices" (99). Imagine that you are Jonas and are writing to the Elders asking them to allow people to make more of their own decisions. How would you argue for color, or for the chance to choose your own spouse and job? Do your best to convince them to get rid of Sameness!

ReplyDeleteI am writing to ask you to get rid of Sameness. For one thing, without color, the world is dull. Colors make people individuals by having their favorite. The lack of color and choice is boring. There's nothing new, so our nation won't grow and neither will our economy. People don't use their creativity or their minds to progress. Having a job you don't like is unproductive because you aren't motivated, and people don't work as hard. They feel stuck. These are the reasons I want you to change Sameness and make it like it was years ago.

ReplyDeleteI know that Sameness works well. Without Sameness, bad things are more likely to happen. But with Sameness, our world isn't as full in many ways. First of all, with Sameness, mankind doesn't have the ability of choice. With the ability of choice, someone can choose their own spouse and be able to have their own kids. Also, what if your Assignment gets old and you want a new one. If there wasn't Sameness, it wouldn't really be an Assignment, because you could choose your own form of work anytime you wanted. Also, when you're Assignment is chosen, it's almost like you're not trusted, so your work is chosen for you, to be safe.
I know that Climate Control works well agriculturally, but when the climate was variable, people could have more with it. When cold, solid, fluffy liquid was falling out of the sky, you could do things with it you can't do now, such as build with it. When it was hot out, you could keep cool by playing with water, and that was fun. Variable climate was more exciting than the climate being the same.
And last of all, please bring back color! There isn't anything wrong with it! Even though it isn't essential to everyday life, it makes things like a lot fuller and nicer. Please take this letter seriously and bring back what I mentioned.

DeleteDear elders, bring back i am not requesting you to bring back color, I am requiring it. Taking away color was a major mistake because then there is no point for great pieces of art even playing. you can use color to symbolize things and without color you just took away one of the things that makes life worth living.You cannot take away one of the only things that makes the world beautiful.

ReplyDeleteYou should bring color back into this world. The people should have a choice to do what they want. If you take away color people would never say "I like your blue robe." The people should be able to have a choice to pick their own perfect spouse instead of the person they never wanted. If you let the people have a choice to pick their own job they can make enough money to survive with their own family. Please let the women have their own kids and not have to give them away. If you change everything back to how it was in the past, then people will no longer be mad or all the same. The people should not be the same because if you were born on June 21st you are the same age as the people that come after you that year so please change somethings to try to make a utopia not a distopia.

Also, people cannot progress if they don't know happiness. That's why we need to get rid of sameness, and bring back color.
